Do not confuse fine age marks with sandpaper marks. On the one hand, it is a shame that a perfectly operational old lighter was destroyed in this manner in a quest for financial gain. The difference only shows once you flip the lid open. If anybody has a model with a larger insert, I would appreciate a picture and any further information for adding to this page. After all, why stamp an area of the lighter that will theoretically never be seen.
Dating Dating zippo inserts
This page is a general guide to the earliest Zippo lighters. Whether the flanged skirt was added later or actually made with it is open to debate. So, no Mickey companions were engraved on genuine wartime zippo lighters. Mine has a couple of very slight marks showing, as do a great many Lady Barcrofts on the market.

The next major difference is the hinge, between the two halves of the lighter case. This was used on lighters manufactured until around the end of The insert also had the same legend.
